Premier League Reading Stars

The Premier League Reading Stars initiative aims to harness the motivational power of football to encourage pupils to improve their literacy skills. The project targets children who may be disillusioned by their ability and interest in literacy, but who do have a passion for football.

Through the partnership of the Premier League, the National Literacy Trust and professional football clubs, Premier League Reading Stars recruits children and parents to take part in football-based literacy activities in schools and libraries across the country.

During December 2011 QPR hosted 2 Premier League Reading Stars training days with over 150 local schools and libraries represented. The new resources were introduced and demonstrated. These included a teaching guide and pack to be used in the classroom and a range of online materials. The online resources feature a number of top Premier League stars, including Joey Barton, introducing a range of literacy challenges.

To support the initiative in local schools and libraries QPR in the Community Trust have hosted a number of reading sessions in the Study Support Centre. These included a tour of the Loftus Road Stadium, discussions on current reading material, analysing the QPR Matchday programme, and a range of interactive literacy activities.
