Mental Health Football

One in four people will have a mental health problem at some time in their lives. QPR in the community trust is committed to using football to tackle both the discrimination faced by sufferers as well as helping to enable people to live more independent and fulfilling lives.

QPR Mental Health Football is for people who have experienced acute or enduring mental health problems. The main aim of the league is to bridge the gap between hospital and community living, provide meaningful activities and to break down barriers of stigma and inclusion within the local communities by educating and normalising mental health. This is built on the premise that football can be an acceptable way for young people (particularly men who shy away from services) to become more physically active and engage, which can help promote their recovery. It aims to increase socialisation, rehabilitation and well being.

Delivery consists of QPR supplying highly qualified coaching staff who delivers football coaching sessions and other football-related activities. Healthcare specialists will work alongside the football coaches enabling aspects of the clients existing programme of care to be delivered simultaneously. This will increase the accessibility of their current care programme and heighten the ability of the healthcare providers to deliver their health services

QPR deliver Mental Health football sessions in partnership with Ealing & Charing Cross Hospitals. These sessions are fun and progressive and the improvements in participant’s health are clear to see since the project begun. With help from QPR In the community coach Matt O’Brien the hospitals have combined to form a team which competes in the Positive Mental Attitude (PMA) League. >
